If you're looking for your first off-campus apartment, here are three things we recommend you check before sending anyone any money.

1. Is the listing even real?

First, check that the property actually exists. Look up the address, check the photos, and make sure the person you're talking to is actually connected to the property and not just a scammer.

2. Can you actually see it?

See the place before you pay. This is a good opportunity to compare the listing to what is actually being offered. If you're not nearby, ask for a live tour. Someone refusing to show you the apartment is a pretty big red flag.

3. Don't let them rush you.

If they're saying send the deposit today or someone else gets it, slow down.
